Microsoft's Free Anti-Virus to Arrive Next Week

For those of you not wanting to pay $50 a year for anti-virus / anti-malware protection, a beta version of Microsoft’s Security Essentials will be out early next week. The service will be free and remain free even after the beta period is over. I’ll guinea pig it for you and try it out when it is available and tell you how it is.

Microsoft announced in November that it was dropping its Live OneCare service in favor of a slimmed-down free offering designed to encourage more people, particularly those who don't want to pay for it and fear it will slow down their computer, to use antivirus software.
