At 233-feet tall, the statue depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. His shoulders are twenty-eight metres wide and his smallest toenail is large enough to easily accommodate a seated person.
There is a local saying: “The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain”. This is partially because the mountain range in which the Leshan Giant Buddha is located is thought to be shaped like a slumbering Buddha when seen from the river, with the Leshan Giant Buddha as its heart.
Without the cage you wouldn't stand a chance swimming with a massive saltwater crocodile.
But for brave punters who still want to get cosy with a feisty croc, a new Australian tourist attraction is offering the chance for a close encounter in the safety of a clear acrylic box dubbed the 'cage of death'.
Just 4cm of acrylic, a pair of goggles and a swimsuit, will separate thrill-seekers from the jaws of Choppa, a saltwater crocodile.
I made a silicone candy mold from Legos. You don't need to make a custom mold. There are many commercially available silicone molds, or you could just skip the mold completely and cut them with cookie cutters, a knife or even scissors.
This is the Star Wars Jedi game that requires you to bring to bear all of your latent telekinetic powers of the Force in order to keep a ball levitating. Similar to EEG technology that reads the alpha and beta waves created by your brain, the game comes with a headset equipped with forehead and ear sensors that translate your brain's energy into a wireless signal that is sent to the game's base station.
The station has a tube with a ball inside (resembling the Jedi training remote Luke Skywalker used on the Millennium Falcon) that is kept levitating by a flow of air; your steady concentration adjusts the air fan's speed, causing the ball to rise and fall. One of the most famous Star Wars Jedi characters--Yoda--provides verbal encouragement during your training: "develop your powers of concentration, you will." You can progress from Padawan to Jedi Master through 15 levels of training.

CUSTOMERS sit at ease as shelves move past them in a new self-service market opened in Los Angeles. The shelves are attached to an endless chain. The customers sit on stools before a counter and pick the groceries they want as the shelves move by. The moving shelf is 157 feet long and makes a complete revolution every eight minutes.
The Hill of Crosses -- a small mountain of approximately 100,000 crosses -- is a curious phenomenon. No one manages or organises it -- it just is. The Soviets razed it again and again, only to have the crosses reappear. As Prof Viatanis Rimkis explains: "During the struggle for our freedom, the crosses became a weapon that was invincible."
Some dog owners just can’t resist anthropomorphizing their canines by dressing them up in costumes. For the dog owner who isn’t satisfied with a costume, plunking down 5, 10 or 20 thousand dollars for a luxury mansion, villa, or cabin may be the next step. Some luxury dog houses are even air conditioned.
As expected, McDonald’s cluster at the population centers and hug the highway grid. East of the Mississippi, there’s wall-to-wall coverage, except for a handful of meager gaps centered on the Adirondacks, inland Maine, the Everglades, and outlying West Virginia.
For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer.
Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!
Suffer a Big Mac Attack out there, and you’re hurtin’ for certain! For a coupla hours, at least, unless graced by the tender blessings of “manna from heaven” - that is, a fast food air drop from the Medi-Copter.
Behold, a visualization of the contiguous United States, colored by distance to the nearest domestic McDonald’s! There are around 13,000-or-so U.S. McDonalds restaurants.

These spectacular hedges cut like a Formula1 car and pit lane mechanics will set the hearts of any motoring fan racing.
Gardeners at the Williams F1 headquarters spend hours every month trimming their topiary - which is positioned in a gravel trap. The 11ft long car is made from six plants and each 6ft high mechanic is made from two.
When it comes to Halloween, greed is most definitely good. And there's nothing like an old pillowcase - sturdy, voluminous, reusable, and environmentally conscious - to hold your epic stash. But you must have wondered - exactly how much candy could you possibly collect in a standard pillowcase? How many houses would you have to visit and how much ground would you have to cover to achieve that that elusive goal?
For most parents the school-run may seem death-defying, but it usually only consists of a quick drive or walk to the gates.
So spare a thought for the families of Gulucan village in West China, who take their lives in their hands every day with a a school walk which involves navigating a narrow path carved into a 5,000-ft cliff-side.
It is the only way they can get to the school, which with its five concrete rooms is the known as the best construction in the village.

Ever have a DVD you ordered from Netflix go missing? Yeah? Well, they found them. The Netflix bandit faces 5 years in prison.
A postal worker who stole more than 3000 DVDs mailed by Netflix to its customers pleaded guilty yesterday to federal theft charges. Myles Weathers, who worked at a mail processing and distribution center in Springfield, Massachusetts, was nabbed last year for the video heist after Netflix officials became suspicious about the frequency with which DVDs were being pinched.

Cops raiding your home looking for drugs? Better hope you don’t have a Wii or they’ll be there all night "searching" for evidence.
As investigators searched the home for drugs, some drug task force members found other ways to occupy their time. Within 20 minutes of entering Difalco's house, some of the investigators found a Wii video bowling game and began bowling frame after frame.

The zero-emissions Mission One ridden by Jeremy Cleland became the fastest electric-powered vehicle when it hit an average speed of 150.059mph over two miles. On the day it broke the record, the plug-in racer also beat 70 per cent of the petrol-engine bikes competing at the famous Bonneville salt flats in the American state of Utah.
Get a load of this super-awesome bargain! For only $129.99 the Geek Squad will come over to your house and set up your $299 PS3. Or, you can have any teenager in a 1,000 mile radius do it for FREE as long as you let him use it after he sets it up. What a tagline: If the Xbox 360 was your girlfriend, she’d be an unstable, high-maintenance gold-digger. Check out the rest of the article to see the break-up letter. Some interesting points are made in it, that’s for sure.
I dumped PlayStation 2 for you on the spot. She was pissed, but I didn't care: it was love at first sight. For a while, everything was perfect. The online gaming, the awesome graphics, the constant stream of kickass games: it was like a dream come true. But then you started to change.
Who says statues are boring? Check out the man with his head through the wall, the impossibly floating faucet, and (the most likely to have been called a big piece of crap), the world's biggest...piece of crap.
This photo was snapped at 6:00 am at Big's convenience store in San Antonio, TX. The photographer has seen people buying tall cans this early and earlier. Apparently it's never too early for a cold one in southern Texas.
In an age of biotechnological juicing, not even the easygoing pastime of fishing is free from controversies over artificial enhancement.
On September 5, Saskatchewan fisherman Sean Konrad caught a 48-pound, world-record rainbow trout. The fish came from Lake Diefenbaker, where trout genetically engineered to grow extra-big escaped from a fish farm nine years ago.
I can’t remember any one night when I lost that ability to drift off, but by the age of seven I would regularly be pacing my room until dawn. I wasn’t a particularly anxious child – there’s no history of insomnia in my family and my mother said I slept well as a baby – so there was no obvious explanation. And no obvious solution: my mother tried everything, but nothing worked.”

You have to admire bands like this that give a little something back to the fans that made them who they are today. The Smashing Pumpkins are giving away a 44 track album for free. And by free, they really mean FREE:
The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.
A lot of people wonder why we post "rumor mill" stuff from unreliable sources. Well, the simple answer is, we post that stuff because a lot of the time it comes true. The 250GB Xbox 360 we told you about a while back has materialized in the form of a Modern Warfare 2 bundle.
The unit will come with a 250GB hard drive, an extra controller and a copy of the game for an extra $100. Here’s an official picture of the bundle, straight from the folks at Microsoft. Damn, I want one of those just for the hard drive.

The biggest and most secretive gathering of ships in maritime history lies at anchor east of Singapore. Never before photographed, it is bigger than the U.S. and British navies combined but has no crew, no cargo and no destination - and is why your Christmas stocking may be on the light side this year.

Virgin Galactic can keep their brief space flight for $200K. Excalibur Almaz plans on offering a week-long space cruise for the tidy sum of $35 million bucks. The company is using ex-Soviet space spyships as the vehicle of choice. I’m guessing that low-orbit is considered international waters so bring on the baccarat baby!
Apart from its fleet of old RRV capsules, now being upgraded with modern life-support and electronics, Excalibur has also acquired some surplus Almaz orbiter spacecraft, the 1970s manned space vessels whose crews were to travel up and down on the RRVs. These secret military spaceships were intended to spy on the Soviet Union's cold-war enemies from on high, under the pretence that they were civilian "Salyut" research stations.
Fans of MC Double Def DP and his 1992 Don’t Copy That Floppy hit should rejoice because the SIIA has released a sequel, Don’t Copy That 2. Rap, Klingons, and a Cops-like sequence of someone running from the police combine to form an interesting video. Newsweek even has an article about it.
A Chinese farmer has invented baby-shaped pears - and he is planning to export his novel idea over here. Plucky farmer Gao Xianzhang has created 10,000 of the mini marvels this season and he plans to take the fruits of his labour to the UK and Europe.
The name light graffiti struggles to do these displays justice. The fantastic spectacles of colour – which are the latest trend in street art – are as impressive as fireworks.
A host of light sources, from flash lights and bike lights to blinking LED lights, are used to ‘paint’ a picture straight onto the camera lens. Also known as light drawing or light painting, these arresting images are created with long exposure cameras in the dark. Sometimes the exposures run on for longer than an hour.
This map is a real piece of eye candy – a model of the British Isles made completely from sweets. Artist Paul Baker turned the UK into Sweet Britain using more than 4,000 sweets in a painstaking model that even includes iconic British landmarks such as Stonehenge and Tower Bridge.
The two-metre-long creation, which took two months to make, also features edible miniatures of the Angel of the North, Silverstone racetrack and the Loch Ness monster.
Not eating for 12-16 hours can help people quickly reset their sleep-wake cycle, according to a study from the Harvard Medical School. This discovery can drastically improve a person's ability to cope with jet lag or adjust to working late shifts.
Scientists have long known that our circadian rhythm is regulated by our exposure to light. Now they have found a second "food clock" that takes over when we are hungry. This mechanism probably evolved to make sure starving mammals don't go to sleep when they should be foraging for food.

A company in New Jersey is testing a prototype of a kinetic energy harvester that looks like a speed bump. The device, dubbed "Motion Power Energy Harvester", is installed in a drive-thru at a NJ Burger King restaurant, where cars generate electricity as they drive over the bumps and pick up their Whoppers. Pretty interesting idea.
It looks like a flattened speed bump with long pedals across the top that press down when tires roll over them. That force turns gears inside, generating 2000 watts of electricity instantaneously, according to the engineers who designed it.
According to this article Apple’s new OS has the potential of saving $10M in energy annually.
Windows 7 has been boasting how it'll consume less energy and save users on battery life and energy costs. But Apple won't be left out on this angle for their OS. According to a CNET review, Snow Leopard could help users cut back on energy consumption by around 10%, and that means an overall savings of as much as $10 million could be realized.

In a world where something is always happening, people are always moving, and equipment is always buzzing, most people don't know what silence really is. But in Minnesota, real silence can be found in a room. In fact, the anechoic chamber found at Orfield Laboratories Inc. is the Quietest Place on Earth, as awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Japan’s LOTTE candy company recently partnered up with Taito to create a commemorative Space Invaders gum as part of the game’s 30th anniversary celebration. Other than the grainy product and assembly line photos above, I haven’t been able to find out anything else about this chewy treat.
Bike maker Craig Calfee has found a way to grow bicycle frames in a field, with sunlight and water. He makes them out of bamboo. “It’s like bonsai basically,” said Calfee, who is based in Santa Cruz, California. “If you grow it in the shape you want it, it’s by far the strongest way to get it in the shape you want it.
