PANHANDLING – 08/26/10 – TORONTO – Joanne Mitchell, 60, and an acquaintance panhandle at a subway entrance at Union Station. The Star handed out five Master Card and Visa gift cards in $50 and $75 denominations to people on the streets who asked for money, and then tracked what was bought. Mitchell said a former friend took her card and spent it on himself. She said she wanted to buy a new pair of pants. – JIM RANKIN/TORONTO STAR
