First Full face transplant ‘a success’

A team of 30 Spanish doctors say they have successfully performed the world’s first full face transplant. A man injured in a shooting accident received the entire facial skin and muscles – including cheekbones, nose, lips and teeth – of a donor.

1. Patient lost jaw, nose and other parts of his face in shooting accident.
2. Donor’s facial skin, muscles, nose, cheekbones, teeth and jawbone used to rebuild patient’s face. Metal plates used to support new facial structure, which included reconstructing the roof of the mouth.
3. Donor’s nerves, blood vessels and skin connected to patient. Patient will have to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his life.

White Bank Robber Fools Cops With Black Guy Mask

Police got a report of a vehicle matching the getaway car’s description at a hotel and found its interior stained with dye bank tellers had slipped into the money bags. Inside, they found Zdzierak, the money, and “what I’m calling a ‘Hollywood quality’ mask,” said a police lieutenant. “These things cost $600-$700.” Zdzierak is now in custody on $3 million bail. “You are the type of villain we read about in novels,” the judge told him.

Avatar Sets First-Day Blu-ray Sales Record

According to Reuters, Avatar set a record for first day Blu-ray sales by moving 1.5M copies the first day, even without 3D or any special features on the disc.

An early industry estimate set overall disc sales comfortably north of 4 million units, putting it well on track to become the year’s top-selling release to date. Blu-ray sales — at 1.5 million copies — well outpaced first-day sales of previous high-definition top dog “The Dark Knight.”

The Big Picture – Earth Day 2010

Yesterday was Earth Day, since 1970 it’s been a day set aside to remember and appreciate the Earth’s environment, and all of our roles within it. As a way to help appreciate and observe our environment, I’ve collected 39 recent images here, each a glimpse into some aspect of the world around us, how it affects and sustains us, and how we affect it. Here’s hoping everyone had a great Earth Day yesterday.

What does “OK” stand for?

There are dozens of other interpretations, all equally knuckleheaded. OK = oll korrect, that’s good enough for me.

(1) It’s a derivative of the Choctaw Indian affirmative “okeh.” Andrew Jackson, who figures in many stories about OK, is said to have introduced the word to the white man.

(2) Another Jackson story has it that he used to mark OK for “oll korrect” on court documents. In the one example of this that was actually unearthed, however, the OK was found actually to be OR, for “order recorded,” a common courthouse abbreviation.

(3) It was a telegraphic signal meaning “open key,” that is, ready to receive. Others say OK was used for “all right” because A and R had already been appropriated for other purposes. Big problem with this theory: the first telegraph message was transmitted in 1844, five years after OK appeared.

(4) It stands for O. Kendall & Sons, a supplier of army biscuits that stamped its initials on its product.

(5) It comes from Aux Cayes, already discussed. A variant is that it comes from the French au quai, “to the dock,” said of cotton that had been approved for loading on a ship.

(6) It stands for Obediah Kelly, a railroad freight agent, who used to mark his initials on documents to indicate all was in order.

(7) It comes from the Greek Olla Kalla, “all good.”

(8) A German general who fought on the side of the Americans in the Revolutionary War used to sign documents OK for Ober-Kommando.
